Fair Project Friday
If pigs learned to fly, would the price of bacon skyrocket? Tyler Schmidt might be able to help you out with that question, with being involved in the swine project for 9 years. Along with the swine project, he has been involved in dairy, wood working, archery, arts & crafts, and baking projects. His market hog this year is named Tub. “He is a very shy pig,” Tyler said, “but when it comes to new adventures, he is up for anything.” Tyler likes working with pigs, walking them around both morning and night to practice for the show ring. He hopes all of the practice and everything he has learned shows when he gets to the fair competition. “It’s nice when you can hold a trophy at the end,” he said.
After being involved with the Calumet County 4-H New Horizons club for 10 years and Brillion FFA Chapter for 6, he has learned so much about his projects and the stresses and responsibilities that come along with them. Working specifically with livestock has taught him that not everything is going to go as planned, so it helps if you have a ‘go with the flow’ mindset. Tyler’s mother and brother helped push him to get involved in 4-H and FFA which has provided so many extraordinary opportunities. Just to name a few, he attended the 4-H spirit trip, a leadership trip to Washington DC, was an FFA officer for 3 years, and has showed at the Calumet County Fair for the past 9 years. His favorite parts about the fair are meeting up with all his fair friends and the many networking opportunities with others from the agriculture industry. He will be headed to UW-River Falls in the fall for ag-business.
The Calumet County Fair runs August 30th through September 2nd. Tyler will be showing his market hog on Friday morning and selling it in the market animal sale on Sunday. If you go,try not to pull a ham-string in the fairs famous catch a pig contest! Good luck with your swine project, Tyler!
#FairProjectFriday...post #20... To show our support to the next generation of agriculture, Country Visions Cooperative will be giving a snapshot look of youth and their fair projects each Friday.
